Detailed Le Petit Mikeno Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Grande Barriere Border Post and drive to Virunga National Park
Arrive in the morning at the Grande Barrier Border Post and complete the required check-in process at the Virunga Tourism Office. Located adjacent to the Passport Control Office, this is where you will receive your Gorilla Permit, Nyiragongo Volcano trekking permit, and Congo Tourist Visa (which should be obtained before departure).
Afterwards, depart from the Grande Barrier building and head to Virunga National Park. Check-in at Mikeno Lodge for a delicious lunch.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trek within the verdant Virunga National Park
After enjoying an early breakfast, proceed to Bukima Ranger Post for registration, briefing, and meeting your knowledgeable Ranger guides. Mountain Gorilla Treks typically commence with a briefing and typically last 1-3 hours of hiking each day. However, trekking duration may occasionally exceed 3 hours, depending on the gorilla group’s location and the terrain’s difficulty.
You will have approximately one hour to spend in the presence of these magnificent mountain gorillas before returning to Mikeno Lodge for a delicious lunch. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing on the lodge’s private terrace, engaging in birdwatching activities in Rumangabo, or taking a tour of the Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage.
Day 3: Ascend Mount Nyiragongo
Enjoy a hearty breakfast and proceed to Kibati Ranger Post to commence the exhilarating Mount Nyiragongo Hike. Upon arrival, receive a briefing from the Park Rangers about the hike and have the option to hire porters for assistance during this adventurous activity.
The ascent to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo typically takes 4-6 hours and rewards you with the opportunity to camp overnight on the awe-inspiring volcano summit, surrounded by breathtaking views.
Day 4: Descend Mount. Nyiragongo and drive back to Goma Town
Indulge in a delightful cup of tea or coffee while savoring the mesmerizing vistas of the Nyiragongo Crater in the morning. Begin your descent towards Kibati Ranger Post, which typically takes around 4 hours. Upon reaching the base, you will be transferred to Goma and dropped off at the Grande Barrier Border crossing. This signifies the conclusion of the Le Petit Mikeno Package.
