Detailed Great Ape Package Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Grande Barriere Border and drive to Virunga National Park
Arrive at Grande Barriere Border crossing by 11:00am and make sure to finalize check-in with the Tourism Office by 12:00pm. Virunga Tourism Office is strategically located within the Grande Barriere Border Post Building, adjacent to the passport Control Office. While here, Tourism Staff will process and provide your gorilla permits, chimpanzee trekking permit and Congo Tourist Visa.
Be driven to Mikeno Lodge at Rumangabo Park Headquarters and be served late Lunch. Spend your afternoon at leisure or watching different bird species or visit the Bamboo project and any other activities.
Day 2: First Gorilla Trek in Virunga National Park
After a delicious breakfast, visitors head to Bukima Ranger Post for registration and briefing before beginning the first gorilla trek. Gorilla Trekking requires half an hour to 3 hours of hiking through the jungles but trekking time also depends on difficulty of terrain and location of the habituated gorilla group.
After spending one hour with the mountain gorillas, trekkers return to Bukima Ranger Post then proceed to Ngila for late lunch. The remainder of the afternoon is spent exploring Bukima through visiting the Bamboo project as well as bird watching.
Day 3: Second Gorilla Trek within Virunga National Park
At 8am visitors begin their second gorilla trek within Virunga National Park. On returning from the gorilla trek, a lunch buffet is served at Ngila. When all visitors have returned from the gorilla trek, you will therefore return to Mikeno Lodge for refreshment, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Trekking the Chimpanzees in Mahura Forest
By 6am, visitors begin the chimpanzee trek. Trekking for the Chimpanzees is an outstanding experience that allows visitors to join a team of Researchers as they study and habituate the troop of Chimpanzees living within Mahura Forest in the neighbourhood of Rumangabo sector.
After hours of being with the Great Apes, return to the Lodge for late breakfast and spend the rest of the day touring Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage Center, exploring Bukima Park Headquarters and unwind with a glass of wine and nice book.
Day 5: Return Back to Goma. Departure
Have breakfast and be transferred back to Goma Town with a drop-off at Grande Barrier Border Post. From here you can continue to any part of Congo or Kigali, Rwanda. This marks the end of your Great Ape tour in D.R. Congo.
