Detailed Mountain Gorillas & Lowland Gorilla Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Drive from Kigali City to Virunga National Park
On arrival at Kigali International Airport or depending on your location in Kigali, be picked by our safari driver for a drive to Virunga National Park. Enjoy an en-route Lunch and crossover to the Democratic Republic of Congo via the Gisenyi-Goma border point.
Straightaway check-in at any lodge or tented camp within Virunga National Park and this is where you will stay for the next two nights.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Pick-up from the Lodge or Tented Camp after breakfast and connect to Bukima Ranger Post for briefing on the mountain gorillas and their outstanding behavior. With your trekking gear and drinking water be at the Headquarters by 7:00am where you join other trekkers for registration as well as briefing before entering the forest to search for the allocated gorilla group.
Trekking can take 1-3 hours, depending on the location of the mountain gorillas but after finding them, viewing and photography time is limited to one hour. After your time with the mountain gorillas, return back to the briefing point to meet your driver for a transfer to the Lodge. In the afternoon relax at the Lodge or undertake a tour of the Park Headquarters at Rumangabo to explore the Bamboo project among other activities.
Day 3: Transfer to Bukavu Town
On this day you will have breakfast and depart for Bukavu, south of L. Kivu. This thrilling boat transfer sets off from Goma at 8am and takes 6-7 hours to Bukavu Town. Find your safari driver waiting at the shores of Lake Kivu for a transfer to your place of stay for meals and overnight stay.
Day 4: Eastern lowland Gorilla Trekking
Have breakfast and transfer to Kahuzi-Biega Park Head Offices for briefing on the Eastern Lowland Gorillas. At 8am start the search for the World’s largest gorilla species in their natural habitat and this lasts 1-4 hours depending on their location. On encountering them, viewing time is one hour then descend back to the briefing point to meet-up with your driver. Return to your Lodge for Lunch and spend the rest of the evening relaxing at the Lodge.
Day 5: Return to Kigali with an en-route visit at Nyungwe Forest National Park & Departure
Have breakfast and begin your journey back to Kigali City, with en-route visit to Nyungwe Forest National Park for the exciting canopy walk. Enjoy the bird-eye view over Nyungwe Forest with views of primates, birds and butterflies.
Continue with the journey and make another stop at Butare Town for lunch and reach Kigali City in the evening for drop-off at a hotel or airport. This marks the end of your 5 days Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega double gorilla trekking.
