Detailed Virunga Classic Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Grande Barriere Border Point
Arrive at the famous Grande Barriere Border crossing in Goma by 11:00am and immediately head to the Virunga Tourism Office. The Tourism Office is also found within the massive Grande Barriere border post building, opposite the passport office. Receive your Congo Tourist Visa, Gorilla Permits, Nyiragongo Hiking permits and make sure to finalize every necessary procedure by 11:30am.
Be transferred to Mikeno Lodge near Rumangabo Park Headquarters for late lunch, refreshment, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: First Gorilla Trek at Virunga National Park
Breakfast at Mikeno Lodge and set off to Bukima Ranger Post for a briefing from ranger guides about the dos and don’ts of trekking the mountain gorillas. Treks for mountain gorillas in the forest normally require half an hour to 3 hours of hiking each day, depending on the movement of the habituated group being trekked as well as the level of difficulty of the terrain.
After spending the allocated one hour with the mountain gorillas, return to Mikeno Lodge for late lunch as well as Rumangabo leisure activities.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking
Be up early for breakfast and undertake a guided forest walk to watch the chimpanzees that call the Mahura Forest home. After a delicious breakfast, take a walk to Senkwekwe Center to spend some quality time with the orphan gorillas, undertake a bird walk and in the afternoon explore Rumangabo Park Headquarters.
Day 4: Gorilla Trek in Virunga National Park
Start your day with breakfast and head to Bukima Ranger post for your second gorilla trek in Virunga National Park. After your wonderful gorilla trek, return back to Mikeno Lodge for late Lunch and spend the remainder of the afternoon visiting the widow’s workshop. Alternatively, you can relax at the Lodge’s Lounge area with a glass of wine and nice book.
Day 5: Mount. Nyiragongo Volcano Climb
Breakfast at Mikeno Lodge and be transferred to Kibati Ranger Post, the starting point for Mount Nyiragongo Hike. On getting there, be briefed on the expectations of the hike then hire porters for the trek. Ascent to the summits of this mountain takes about 4-6 hours before setting overnight tents.
Day 6: Descend to Kibati Ranger Post and return back to Goma
By 6:00am hikers have to begin descending back to Kibati Ranger Post and takes average of 4 hours. On reaching the bottom, hikers are taken back to Goma Town for a drop-off at Grande Barriere Border crossing. This marks the end of our Virunga Classic tour in D.R. Congo.
