Detailed 7 Days Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Rwanda – Kigali International Airport
Welcome to Remarkable Rwanda! Arrive at Kigali International Airport where you will be met and greeted by your private safari driver/guide. If time allows, learn about Rwanda’s pre-colonial, Colonial and post-colonial times and Genocide history through the City excursion and later drop-off at a Hotel for refreshment, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Kigali City – Akagera National Park
Breakfast at the Hotel in Kigali City and pick-up by your private safari driver for a transfer to the Eastern Province of Rwanda. Make en-route stopovers at the community-based tourism projects to learn about the Traditional pastoralist cultures of Rwandan people.
Immediately check-in at the lodge in Akagera’s wilderness for Lunch and later head for a boat ride on Lake Ihema. Sail through the calm waters of this Lake and spot numerous bird species within the surrounding wetland marked by several tree species and also encounter huge Hippos and Nile crocodiles in the shallow shores.
Day 3: Half day game drive in Akagera National Park and drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Get up early for breakfast them embark on a morning game drive through Akagera National Park where a wide range of game species will be spotted. Drive through the far-reaching savannah plains, Acacia woodlands, Rock outcrops and forest where black and white colobus monkeys, Impalas, elephants olive baboons, Cape buffaloes, Tsessebe, Bushbucks, Roan antelopes, Common elands, Common duikers, Defassa waterbucks, Rothschild giraffes, Oribis, Sable antelopes, Burchell’s zebras and gazelles can be spotted.
Later drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park, arriving in the late evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest and drive to Gisenyi, Lake Kivu
Early Morning breakfast then move or be driven to Nyungwe Forest National Park Headquarters for registration and briefing on chimpanzee tracking. In the company of Park rangers and other trekkers begin the search for the large habituated chimpanzee troop and this lasts 1-3 hours.
Remember to carry your chimpanzee trekking permit, passport for registration in addition to wearing appropriately and carrying backpack, rain jacket and a good camera. Your guide will spot the chimpanzees from afar after which spend one hour viewing and taking shots of them going around their daily routine of grooming, playing, caring for young ones and resting. After your one hour with the chimpanzee troop, return back to your lodge for lunch and later drive to Lake Kivu.
Day 5: Lake Kivu – Volcanoes National Park
Have breakfast and undertake a boat ride to the different Islands of Lake Kivu. Most interestingly explore the Coffee Island to learn about coffee growing, weeding, harvesting, processing and packaging.
Also enjoy the crop-cup coffee experience to have a taste of pure Rwandan coffee and depart for Volcanoes National Park for a remarkable gorilla trekking experience.
Day 6: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Early breakfast at your Lodge in the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park and transfer to the Park Headquarters. Registration and briefing is done on arrival at the Park Headquarters, followed by being assigned a habituated gorilla family based on your level of physical fitness, personal interests and age. There are over 80 gorilla permits available daily for trekking by 8 persons per habituated group. Follow the lead of armed Ranger guide who follows the trails of the allocated gorilla group for 1-5 hours before being spotted and spending one hour in their presence.
After this unforgettable trek, return back to your lodge for a hot meal and afternoon refreshment. In the evening be led to the border of Volcanoes National Park, to explore the Gorilla Guardian Village to learn about ancient and present way of life of Rwandan people.
Day 7: Scenic drive from the foothills of Virunga volcanoes to Kigali City
Enjoy breakfast at your place of stay and undertake a scenic drive from Volcanoes National Park, through the vast tea, coffee and banana plantations to Kigali City. On arrival at the City, be dropped off at a hotel or airport for a flight to your next destination.
