Detailed 8 Days Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Drive to Akagera National Park in Eastern Rwanda for wildlife viewing experiences
Our Company driver will meet/greet you at any location in Kigali in the morning for a drive to Akagera National Park. When you get there, you will be checked in at your booked Safari Lodge. Settle-in at the lodge, freshen-up, have lunch and watch some of the bird species roaming around the lodge.
Dinner and comfortable stay at any of the budget, midrange or luxury Safari Lodges in Akagera National Park.
Day 2: Half day Game drive and afternoon boat ride on Lake Ihema
On this day you will undertake a game drive through the Northern sector of Akagera National Park, the part with the highest concentration of wildlife species. Driving here you will come across African bush elephants, Rothschild giraffes, warthogs, Cape buffaloes, Topis, Kobs, lions, Rhinos, leopards, hartebeests and many others. Seeing all the mentioned animals is not guaranteed but on a lucky day you might encounter all the big five animals.
Your afternoon will be spent cruising on the calm waters of Lake Ihema where you will see several Hippos and Crocodiles as well as numerous wetland, water and woodland-dwelling bird species. Comfortably spend overnight and enjoy dinner at one of the Safari Lodges in Akagera National Park.
Day 3: All day transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Be up early for breakfast and transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park. This is probably one of the most scenic drives of a safari destination and involves visiting the Ethnographic Museum in Butare and en-route Lunch before arriving Nyungwe Forest in the evening.
Day 4: Trekking for Chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest and afternoon Canopy Walk
Breakfast early in the morning and head into Nyungwe Forest to search for the Chimpanzee. The best time to start watching the chimpanzees is before sunrise to ably watch them wake up and go about their daily routine. Locating then in the dense jungles of Nyungwe Forest takes 1-4 hours then you will spend one hour around them before retreating back to the Lodge for Lunch.
Your afternoon is dedicated for the canopy walk to get the bird’s eye view of the lush forest. While on this activity you will come across several species of primates, bird species and butterflies among others. Sumptuous dinner and stupendous overnight stay within the verdant Nyungwe Forest.
Day 5: Continue to Lake Kivu
On this day you will continue to Lake Kivu for relaxation holiday on the shores of this beautiful Lake. Lunch on arrival and in the afternoon undertake a boat ride to the remarkable Coffee Island to learn about its history, coffee growing, harvesting and processing.
A visit to this Island rewards you with the views of the Nyiragongo Volcano, Congo’s Active Mountain and at sunset return back to the Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Proceed to Volcanoes National Park
Embark on a transfer to Volcanoes National Park, home to the country’s mountain gorillas. In the afternoon arrive the Park for Lunch and later undertake a boat ride on the Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera. Dinner and overnight stay at a Luxury, midrange or Budget Lodge.
Day 7: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and breathtaking experience at Gorilla Guardian Village
On this day you will be trekking and encountering the endangered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. An early wake up call for breakfast at the Lodge and be at the Park Headquarters by 07h00 to catch-up with the early morning briefing. After the briefing, be assigned a habituated gorilla group then proceed to the jungles to search for the mountain gorillas.
Treks last 1-4 hours depending on the location of the mountain gorillas and you have one hour around them. After your precious time with the mountain gorillas, return to the Lodge for Lunch.
In the afternoon head for a refreshing cultural experience at the Gorilla Guardian Village then dinner and overnight as the previous night.
Day 8: Hotel or Airport Drop-off
Breakfast and transfer to Kigali City, with en-route shopping. This marks the end of our 8 days Impressive Rwanda Holiday.
